A Statement Issued by the Palestinian Ministry of Health Regarding the Assassination of Dr. Thabet Ahmad Thabet

December 31, 2000

In this most critical, tough and difficult situation, during which our medical and health staff are exerting exceptional and extraordinary efforts to support and assist the victims among the sons of our heroic people, and amid this most demanding, most emergent circumstances, the Israeli Occupation forces has added to its record of violence and series of aggressions against our health and medical staff, against our health institutions in their various locations, a new aggression by assassinating Dr. THABET AHMAD THABET, the Martyr of the Palestinian Medical family and the Palestinian Ministry of Health half through his way to his work station to fulfill his humanitarian mission. He has always been a dedicated employee who has always accomplished his medical task, whether through his position as a dentist, or his late position as Director General of Inspection and Control, with extreme loyalty and dedication, contributing in alleviating the suffering of the injuries and the wounded among the Palestinian People.

He has, as well, contributed to the up grading of the general performance level in the Ministry of health and the other various Palestinian medical institutions.

The assassination of our colleague, the human and the doctor by the Israeli Occupation Forces comes to clearly prove their barbaric and malicious aggression on each and every sector of the Palestinian People, including medical staff, thus violating all the international accords, agreements, or conventions, among them the 4th Geneva convention for protection of all non-armed civilians  and medical personnel who provide services for peoples, under all circumstances.

Ever since the beginning of occupation up to this moment, the Israeli Occupation has been committing various massacres, without discrimination between children, old people or women reaching the

Climax of hostility and brutality by attacking once again our medical staff, while accomplishing their humanitarian mission and duty in alleviating the pains of those injured or wounded.

Despite our enormous grief on the martyrdom of our colleague Dr. Thabet Ahmad Thabet, the Palestinian Ministry of Health together with all health institutions working in Palestine, both governmental or NGO’s, do promise the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Martyrs to take after our hero Martyr, Dr Thabet Thabet, and our martyr, the ambulance driver, Bassam Bilbeisi, and all Palestinian martyrs in their walk, style and method, to defend our people and end up their suffering. We also promise our people, our injures, our severely wounded victims to carry on our commitment in maintaining the provision of the various health and medical services that are required and needed, despite the siege and the closure, the impediments and the blockades by which the Israeli occupation attempts to hinder or prevent our medical staff from reaching their locations in hospitals, clinics, or centers, to carry out their national and humanitarian duties.

The Palestinian Ministry of health would like to stress its urgent call upon the Palestinian Leadership to ensure an international protection for the Palestinian people. Also, we urgently appeal to all Arab and International institutions, the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the International Red Cross Committee to intervene and stop the continued Israeli aggression, and the brutal actions of the Israeli settlers on our children and women. We also appeal for the protection of our health and medical staff and ambulances to enable us carry out our national and humanitarian duties of relief and rescue.

Together, Hand in Hand, until the Palestinian Independent State, and the Holy Jerusalem as its Capital, under the leadership of our Leader and Paragon of our resistance, President Yaser Arafat.
